SLICE KNEE WITH AXE On a farm, nearly 17 years old. We - the 1st 15 rugby team - were on a farm cutting firewood as part of fund raising for an overseas rugby trip. After about an hour - maybe - I was using an axe to trim branches off some of the bigger lengths of trunks/branches before they were put onto the truck, when I went to step over a fallen tree trunk. I was holding the axe handle near the head so it was sort of horizontal to the ground. Safe I thought. SLIGHT AXE-TOUCH TO THE KNEE Unfortunately, I clipped the toe of my right boot on the tree trunk as I stepped over and lost my balance a little - just enough for the axe to touch the top of my right knee. I felt a slight ‘tap’ of the axe on my knee, which felt immediately sore so once my right foot hit the ground I looked at that knee expecting to see a slight cut at worst. I found out a few months later, that the team mate whose home the axe had come from, had spent hours shapening the axe to the sharpest it could be. Unfortunately, the axe had sliced the kneecap area ‘clean open’. I could clearly see whatever was under the skin - it sort of looked very whiteish and like it was turning inside out. I immediately dropped the axe and used both hands to close the wound. “Take me to the hospital” I said. “CAN’T BE THAT BAD” The team vice-captain was close by and turned to me saying something like “it can’t be that bad, give me a look.” So I took my hands away and the knee immediately peeled wide open again - this time with blood starting to flow. There was now no arguement from him that hospital was required. I quickly closed the wound together again. Yep. Bandaged up tight and into a car for the a bit over hour trip to the hospital. NOT QUITE ‘FIXED’ THE FIRST TIME After a while they stictched me up and sent me home. That night it had to be re-opened by our family’s doctor to remove a bloodclot - but that’s another story. MOSTLY OWN ‘REHAB’ The recovery took quite a while - not only for the wound to heal, but also for me to learn to trust ‘the scar’ and to rebuild the right thigh muscle that got quite ‘wasted’ during the few weeks of ‘straight leg’ awaiting for the wound to heal. I did a lot of extra training to get back to enough fitness to be ready for the start of the rugby season a few months after the ‘slice’. Scar still very visible and occasionally a little sensitive. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ (Back) To… Incidents Overview Page (Back) To… “S-P-C” Site Overview Map ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ WARNING: “Self-Physi-Chiro” may make it easier for you to form positive changes within and to your health/life. “SteveKineez” ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ For whole site overview, visit … Steve “Kineez” SITE MAP Site-Wide Disclaimer and Copyright Notices
