FLYING SOFTBALL BAT TO HEAD
A simple case of mis-communication.
At School, 9 or 10 years old.
I was fortunate for one of my birthdays to get a softball bat, ball and glove.
Sometimes I’d take one or more of these to school.
This particular day I may have taken all three for our sports session.
Anyway, at the end of the school day, my great friend ‘Murr’ ended up with the bat
but was also some 20 or so metres (50-60ft) away from me.
GIVE MY BAT BACK
I shouted out to remind Murr that he had my bat and to bring it over to me,
rather than put it with the school gear.
I’m not sure what happened but there quickly came a point where
I felt I needed to shout out to Murr “Dont’ throw it”.
To be fair, he was shaping up to throw it towards me.
“What?” he replied.
“Don’t throw it” I reiterated.
ONE WAY BOOMERANG BAT
Now Murr was by far the tallest kid in my class
and hence one of the strongest.
Next thing he threw the bat and it flew through the air towards me
spinning on its mid-point - a bit like a bomerang.
I went to move one way but the bat seemd to follow,
so I went to move the other way and the bat seemed to follow me that way.
So like a rabbit in the headlights,
my feet froze, as I tried to duck and cover my head with my arms.
Too late - crack!
WRAP AROUND BAT
The bat seemed to hit one side of my head (I think the left),
then spin-wrap itself against my head to the other side -
in effect, hitting me once on one side as it came in
and once on the other side as it left,
with an impact line ‘drawn’ in-between.
“Boo Hoo” said I.
Murr came running a bit towards me to check if I was ok -
because we were friends, but also because Murr had a habit
of ‘playing up’ in class and didn’t need to get into any more trouble
than he usually did on most school days.
I said - through sobbing tears - “I said not to throw it”
“Oh” Murr replied, “I thought you said to throw it!”
STILL FEEL IT
I pretty sure this injury still contributes to some of my 24/7 head pain.
