TEETH INTO ‘TRAP-DOOR’ HANDLE
Playing at a neighbour’s place, about 12 years old
(maybe a bit younger)
One of the delights of my childhood was having local open space to play in,
inlcuding our two close neighbours who had very large residential properties.
One day at the ‘tree house’ of the closest neighbour,
we were climbing from one platform up to another,
using a make-shift ladder that went through a ‘new trapdoor’.
The trap door was really an old oven door that was ‘jimmed’ into place
by a couple of bits of timber, so that it slid back and forth
to either open or close the ‘trap door’.
Myself and the two neighbour boys were on the top floor with the trap door shut.
It came time to get down, so the trap door was slide open - amazing! -
and we took turns to get down.
When my turn came, I was face-out rather than face-in to the ladder
- yes basic safety I now know -
and yes, the inevitable happened.
I slipped and went top front teeth first into the oven door handle.
I was more in shock than pain, but it was obvious I had done some damage
as the two top front teeth felt ‘jaggedy’ and a little shorter -
especially the left front one.
We had to call my dad at his work,
who came and arranged an emergency dental appointment,
where I was told the teeth would need repairing,
but not worth doing until I was about 16 years of age!
The eventual repair did occur
and it has since had to be re-done.
Its a bit better looking now with a more ‘natural’ look to the ‘capped’ left one.
Perhaps more of emotional rather than physical damage -
especially all those years of the ‘chipped’ front teeth,
followed by a very obvious ‘repair’ -
however, still another head knock to the list.
