DIFFICULTIES PLAYING SPORT From early days with ‘tennis elbow’ to various injuries during high school years and a few beyond, most physical sports that I enjoyed basically became immpossible to do. TENNIS Encouraged to play tennis from a young age mainly through parent invovlement and family history in that sport, tennis was always a challenge in terms of elbow soreness and difficulty doing the overhead serve - possibly linked to neck issues from a during birth subluxation. I also found it difficult to not get angry while on the court - looking back now with a better understanding of pain, I can see why that could easily manifest itself on a regular basis. Pretty much became a social-only activity from mid-high school onwards. CRICKET Really only played cricket ‘seriously’ during my primary school years. By the time I got to high school, bowling or throwing the ball usually lead to a very tender/sore right shoulder and/or elbow. Played a bit of indoor cricket in a rural competition during the mid-latter 1980s, but the next day was always one of near body-wide pain and stiffness, which made doing physical orchard work very challenging to say the least. Did get to do a bit more bowling during coaching a high school-aged team, which by then (2011), the ©S-P-C©-type exercises I was doing quite regularly, were showing signs of being at least reasonably successful - as ‘proved’ by being able to bowl quite a few overs worth ‘in-the-nets’ and not have major shoulder and elbow problems the next day. RUGBY UNION Growing up in New Zealand, this was the game I loved playing the most and I spent many hours during my primary school years, honing my ball carrying skills, along with ‘perfecting’ the swerve and side step. However, by the time i finished high school, it was obvious to me that I could no longer carry on playing rugby. Apart from now being ‘prone to injury’, as well as the injuries I was now ‘carrying’ - especially the school-chair, head-high tackle, kick in the back and rib injuries - (see Injuries List) the most important issue for me was tackling. For one, the ability to ‘lay’ a decent tackle without hurting myself became almost an impossibity - at least I could modify how I tackled to lower my chances of self-injury, but using the top of my right shoulder as the main and most effective ‘weapon’, basically caused instant self-injury. More importantly though, it had become very diffcult to ‘absorb’ a decent tackle ‘laid’ on me - anything to my (right side) ribs in particular, usually lead to difficulty breathing, let alone standing up and having the ability to run - or indeed, absorb another one of those sort of tackles. It was goodbye forever to playing that great game post-high school. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ (Back) To… ‘Effects of Injuries’ List Page (Back) To… “S-P-C” Site Overview Map ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ WARNING: “Self-Physi-Chiro” may make it easier for you to form positive changes within and to your health/life. “SteveKineez” ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ For whole site overview, visit … Steve “Kineez” SITE MAP Site-Wide Disclaimer and Copyright Notices
